Gary Hume’s work stripped the portrait into a minimal form and compartmentalizes it into line, shape and colour. Working from a variety of secondary images realised in household and gloss paint Hume creates work that is as smooth and polished as some of the celebrities that inspire them.

John Stezaker works with ready made iconography that have been influenced by surrealism to create striking juxtapositions between the figure/portrait, landscape and topography. His collage based compositions suggest a deeper, psychological narrative towards the viewer and hidden unexplored aspect behind the character.

Light writing is a direct manipulation technique involving long exposures and ‘in camera’ manipulation. This abilty to alter, change or creatively stylise composition allows for more experimental outcomes and creative interventions.

Kehinde Wiley

Kehinde Wiley is a fusion painter whose work blur the boundaries between traditional and contemporary styles and plays with visual juxtapositions. These paintings take stereotypes of masculinity and envelope these characters with pattern and colour as diverse as Islamic Architecture, French Rococo, West African Textile to Urban Hip Hop.

Maurizio Galimberti

Maurizio Galimberti is a photographer who worked exclusively in polaroid. Even though Galimberti worked within the confines of the geometric or grid format his compositions explore rhythm and movement. This Polaroid mosaics that explore the portrait are probably the most aesthetically pleasing and expand the portrait as good as any cubist painter.

Photo Booth Photography

Andy Warhol championed the use of photo booth photography to create an instant record of an emotion, a brief or social encounter, a reunion of friends or the family unit. The photo booth process and rapid succession of images allowed the sitter to gaze anxiously awaiting the flash or provides an opportunity to escape from their everyday persona. We have used this process to investigate persona, sterotype and expand on photographic techinques. For details about one of the last photoautomat’s (Photo Booth) in London see here!

Chistian Guémy’s (otherwise known as C215) art has been influenced by Stencil pioneers such as Blek Le Rat, though his Classical remastering of Caravaggio or religious icongraphy and Banksy through his exploration of animals. However it’s C215‘s celebration and social anthropologic commentary of forgotten souls, street/homeless that celebrate global and cultural diversity that Christian Guémy is most celebrated for. These portraits have reenergised the stencil art scene introducing a new complexity of stencil and through the sighting of this work globally and narrative/questions raised.

C215 or Chistian Guémy is one of our featured artist in our 2011 GCSE Art/Textiles exam brief entitled ‘People and Places’ and we have interpreted C215‘s visual language through a combination of drawing, serigraphy and appliqué.

Jenny Saville is a YBA whose work pays tribute to the painterly mark making styles of Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud. Saville explores themes of disfigurement, distortion, abstraction and deformity centre largely on the female figure especially her own figure/portrait. Piet Mondrian is widely known for his numerous gridded compositions using the primary colours Red, Yellow and Blue. Mondrian‘s career was consumed with the pursuit of mathematical and artistic compositional combinations to acheive an aesthetic nirvana. Resulting in one of his final compositions the Jazz inpsired Broadway Boogie-Woogie.

Tinhead otherwise known as Christopher Wright is a UK based experimental Illustrator and mixed media artist. His work consists of lo-tech illustrations and mixed media collage/compositions that pay homage to the early Pop Art aesthetic of early Richard Hamilton and Peter Blake et al. Tinhead’s work features on The Foals debut album ‘Antidotes’.

Gilbert and George

Gilbert and George are a creative pairing who have worked together for over 40 years and regard themselves as living sculptures. They have disassociated their art from their everyday lives, insisting that everything they do is art. Their latter work involves large scale gridded photographic work often with provokotive language or slang and imagery from sections of society.
