Gary Hume’s work stripped the portrait into a minimal form and compartmentalizes it into line, shape and colour. Working from a variety of secondary images realised in household and gloss paint Hume creates work that is as smooth and polished as some of the celebrities that inspire them.

Dave White

Dave White has been referred to as the UK’s answer to Andy Warhol and with modernist themes; such as star wars, and super heroes and villains to Roy Lichtenstein inspired vintage military painting, delicious food and drink paintings that would make Claes Oldenburg hungry and commissions for Nike and Coca Cola its easy to see why? Dave White‘s work oozes from the canvas, part action painting, part explosion, part abstract expressionism minus the abstraction. He is creativity cataloguing childhood dreams and young adolescent desires through a retro yet contemporary visual language.

Karl Blossfeldt

Karl Blossfeldt was a sculptor and photographer who is famous for his photographs of natural forms. These closely documented monochrome photographs create minimalist compositions that focus an intense scrutiny on the natural forms. Karl Blossfeldt is one of our featured artists in our Level 2 Natural Forms Project and our learners have responded to Blossfeldt’s work through Photography, Textiles, Printing and Painting.

Jenny Saville

Jenny Saville is a YBA whose work pays tribute to the painterly mark making styles of Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud. Saville explores themes of disfigurement, distortion, abstraction and deformity centre largely on the female figure especially her own figure/portrait. Her work has inspired our BTEC Level 3 project entitled ‘Surfaces’.

Laura Oldfield Ford‘s work chronicles and maps the city, exposing hidden narratives, social and economic currents e.g. social housing regeneration. Through her post modern punk zine/blog ‘Savage Messiah‘, Oldfield produces drawings, mark making and collage compositions that capture the raw concrete estates and brutalist flyovers. Laura Oldfield Ford is one of the featured artists in our Level 3 BTEC ‘In the City‘ Project.

Wayne Thiebaud

Wayne Thiebaud is affliated to the Pop movement as his work is inspired by popular cuisine such as cakes, pasties and sweets found in Canteens or Diners. These compositions follow the Pop Art aesthetic of using bright colours and are applied in a thick pallette as if icing a cake. Wayne Thiebaud is one of the featured artists in the Food and Drink Project.

They will be collaborating on a large scale mapping project that looks at hidden narratives, alternative futures and community housing within the city. Gilbert and George are a creative pairing who have worked together for over 40 years and regard themselves as living sculptures. They have disassociated their art from their everyday lives, insisting that everything they do is art. Their latter work involves large scale gridded photographic work often with provokotive language or slang and imagery from sections of society.

The idea of using stains as a theme for the surfaces project came accidentally when I lifted up my cup to see a ring stain left on a piece of cloth. I started to create and develop stains investigating how they reacted with different materials and surfaces e.g. paper, large wooded areas and fabric.

To extend the stains experiments further I introduced photographic chemicals and the Photogram/Raygram process inspired by Man Ray introducing a series of drips and exploring the positive and negative space.

I was very pleased with how the ring stains on the photogram turned out and decided to experiment with these pictures using ICT, scanning them onto photoshop and manipulating the colours.

From there I moved into 3D and relief casting as I wanted to explore the outcome of lifting the stains looking at the height and depth while using the same colour scheme from my ICT experiments.

Recently I have been experimenting with ‘accidental’ stains e.g where a cup of tea was thrown at a white dress, whilst maintaining the colour scheme from previous works. I’ve stitched around the stains to enhance them which is influenced by Nava Lubelski who stitches around stains on table cloths, canvas, paper and sheets to expose the beautiful, colourful abstract movement of the stain.

Pablo Picasso is one of the most famous and prolific artists of the 20th Century. Picasso produced work in a wide variety of medium such as Painting, Print Making, Sculpture, Ceramics and Photography, navigating themes/movemnets including the Blue and Rose period, Symbolism, African, Cubism, Neo-Classicism, Surrealism and Abstraction.

Adam Neate

Adam Neate is a street artist who has produced thousands of portraits on old, found or discarded cardboard which he returns back to the street as part an ongoing open exhibition for people to encounter, pick up and collect.

Neate use of found materials echos early Abstract Expressionists and Neo Dadists and his portraiture styles range from Abstraction, Constructivism to Vorticism.
