Carsten Witte is a photographer whose work encompasses fashion, beauty and advertising. Witte’s work is centred around the juxtapositions; themes of beauty and death, through the Dia de los Muertos inspired portraits or the formal and abstract found in his light projections portraits that expose elements of the face, layering an additional veil of beauty that raises questions about the validity of the model beauty in the first place?

This years fashion show and Catwalk was our biggest ever with over 30 dresses, collections and accessories designed, modelled and manufactured by our BTEC/GCSE Learners Yr9 – Yr13. The themes and inspirations were diverse and eclectic ranging from the stalward Food and Drink, Futurist fashion to Gothic couture.

The sketchbook and portfolio have been constant pillars of Art, Craft and Design Education. However, with the Nintendo and iPod generations now ‘digital natives’ on image manipulation software, social networking sites and image hosting sites such as Photoshop, Flickr and Tumblr. The ‘digital sketchbook‘ has never been easier and more immediate. This project brief and subsequent research, promotes visual and creative networking within our KS5 learners, consolidates the idea and use of digital sketchbooks whilst establishing discussion through Tumblr lesson stimuli.

Colin Chillag

Colin Chillag is a painter who produces photo realist portraits developed from a minimal linear drawing. These portraits are realised through unbelievable brushwork. However these portraits also show the scar of this artistic toil with the portraits co-existing with the paint palette that created them. To deface these portraits during their creation is a wonderfully brutal act: promoting dialogue on the psyche of the artist, their environment and the stream of consciousness of the artist.

Maurizio Anzeri creates embroidered or sculptured photographs using symmography. The visual narratives are selected from vintage photographs found in secondhand markets and rather than wrapping thread around pins Maurizio Anzeri penetrates the photograph with thread. The needle work creates creative costumes for the sitter, evoke a psychological aura or express emotion of feeling through his textiles doodles.

Our latest brief for the Level 3 BTEC/GCE course, learners investigate the Psychology behind the creative process studying and responding to the work of contemporary artists ranging Colin Chillag, Anzeri Maurizio to Dan Mountford. As part of their creative investigations learners looked at pure, uncontrolable emotion such as rage or anger and were challenged to create an orginal piece of work , selecting materials and processes that best communicate this.

Gary Hume’s work stripped the portrait into a minimal form and compartmentalizes it into line, shape and colour. Working from a variety of secondary images realised in household and gloss paint Hume creates work that is as smooth and polished as some of the celebrities that inspire them.

John Stezaker works with ready made iconography that have been influenced by surrealism to create striking juxtapositions between the figure/portrait, landscape and topography. Kehinde Wiley is a fusion painter whose work blur the boundaries between traditional and contemporary styles and plays with visual juxtapositions. These paintings take stereotypes of masculinity and envelope these characters with pattern and colour as diverse as Islamic Architecture, French Rococo, West African Textile to Urban Hip Hop.

Maurizio Galimberti is a photographer who worked exclusively in polaroid. Even though Galimberti worked within the confines of the geometric or grid format his compositions explore rhythm and movement. This Polaroid mosaics that explore the portrait are probably the most aesthetically pleasing and expand the portrait as good as any cubist painter.
