Faile is a international art collective consisting of Patrick McNeil, Patrick Miller and Aiko Nakagawa. Their work ranges from printmaking, stenciling and painting and is heavily influenced by popular culture and the works of Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Julian Opie

Julian Opie investigates the figure, portraiture and landscape. He produced highly stylised and minimal pictures using mixed media (including video and ICT). In his portraiture the human face is reduced to a series of black outlines with flat areas of colour.

To help showcase the talents of our learners we have asked our friends at hopelies.com to produce a review on a short film entitled ‘Dental’ by our Learner Liz.

The nature of the imagery is largely static, with the photograph-like composition providing a voyeuristic slant on proceedings. The film is deeply observational in style, with a telling note being that the only life seen on-screen is within the fish tank, and that the only other movement comes from the neon sign. The window blinds shield both the viewer and the unseen protagonist from the outside world, while the image of a faraway tropical beach suggests a certain degree of aspiration within the consciousness of the concealed character.

The use of Jon Brion’s score from Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind serves as a structural guide of sorts for the viewer, with the melancholy opening notes eventually giving way to the more upbeat tone as the film progresses, leading the viewer’s attention and in turn complimenting the fixed visual style and relentless, uninterrupted edit.
