Vladimir Tatlin‘s Tower formed the blueprint for avant -guarde architectural design for the twentieth century.

We have used the Russian Constructivist aesthetic using a set of architectural forms and introducing Surface, Pattern and Graphical techniques to create our own versions.

The exhibition ‘Fashioning Felt‘ currently on in New York has some fantastic examples of how artists and designers have used felt in art, design, fashion, architecture, and interiors. Hopefully the exhibition will tour and come to London.

I particulary like this photographic step by step of how people in Turkmenistan create large traditional felted rugs, the process is exactly the same as normal wet felting just on a larger scale.

Having started as a commercial artist Andy Warhol looked at ‘popular culture‘ for his inspiration. Warhol has explored this topic through Painting, Drawing, Print, Installation, Sculpture, Photography, Film, Audio and Music. His most iconic works are his screenprinted portraits of celebrities and his portrayal of popular everyday food packaging and logos.

Chistian Guémy’s (otherwise known as C215) art has been influenced by Stencil pioneers such as Blek Le Rat, though his Classical remastering of Caravaggio or religious icongraphy and Banksy through his exploration of animals. However it’s C215‘s celebration and social anthropologic commentary of forgotten souls, street/homeless that celebrate global and cultural diversity that Christian Guémy is most celebrated for. These portraits have reenergised the stencil art scene introducing a new complexity of stencil and through the sighting of this work globally and narrative/questions raised.

C215 or Chistian Guémy is one of our featured artist in our 2011 GCSE Art/Textiles exam brief entitled ‘People and Places’ and we have interpreted C215‘s visual language through a combination of drawing, serigraphy and appliqué.

Caroline Kirton creates applique and machine embroiderd snapshots of her teenage daughters and friends. Her work looks at teenage life from the point of view of an adult or parent. Kirton states “My work is also concerned with the issues of control and how young people often feel they have no real control over their lives because of parental and official boundaries”.

Eduardo Paolozzi was a leading figure in the early British Pop Art movement and produced several collages that established the future POP blueprint. His latter works still maintain the Pop collage aesthetic but take influences of cubism in the geometric patterned backgrounds and futurism with the use of Industrial and Mechanical forms.

The Food and Drink Fashion show inspired by Food and Drink was such a great success we have now expanded our curriculum to include BTEC/GCSE Level 2 and 3 Fashion courses and a bi annual showcases. Not only did it showcase the high quality designs produced by our Yr 10/11 BTEC Textiles Learners, the event also raised nearly £200 for the ‘Sniff for Life’ charity.
