Vladimir Tatlin‘s Tower formed the blueprint for avant -guarde architectural design for the twentieth century.

We have used the Russian Constructivist aesthetic using a set of architectural forms and introducing Surface, Pattern and Graphical techniques to create our own versions.

Andy Warhol

Having started as a commercial artist Andy Warhol looked at ‘popular culture‘ for his inspiration. Warhol has explored this topic through Painting, Drawing, Print, Installation, Sculpture, Photography, Film, Audio and Music. His most iconic works are his screenprinted portraits of celebrities and his portrayal of popular everyday food packaging and logos.

The Boyle Family

In the 1960′s the Boyle Family started a life long project to document surfaces of the planet. This ‘drawing through materials’ aesthetic has been inspired by earth, air, fire and water; animals, vegetables, minerals; insects, reptiles, water creatures; human beings and societies; physical elements and fluids from the human body and have been documented through performances, data collection, projections, sculpture and photography.

We look at the Boyle Family as part of our Level 3 ‘Surfaces‘ project and have included a documentary link featuring the family discussing their work.

Consumerism in Art

Since the Pop Art movement consumerism and branded products have been investigated and influenced the work of artists. Company’s such as Absolut and Becks have recruited popular artists to promote and temporary rebrand their products with their own brand of art to increase sales.

Soft Sculpture – Objects from the home

Soft sculptures are made by using fabric to construct 3-dimensional objects. Claes Oldenburg was one of the first artists to use fabric as a sculptural material in the 1960′s. Margarita Cabrera is a contemporary artist who works with soft sculpture taking everyday objects and recreating them using fabric.

Space Invader

Space Invader has been invading cities across the world for many years with his mosaic tiled creations. Invader has expanded his pixelated images by introducing the ‘Rubic Cube‘ at his recent ‘Low Fidelity‘ exhibition at the Lazarides Gallery, Rathbone Place, London.

Student Blog: Surfaces and Nava Lubelski

The idea of using stains as a theme for the surfaces project came accidentally when I lifted up my cup to see a ring stain left on a piece of cloth. I started to create and develop stains investigating how they reacted with different materials and surfaces e.g. paper, large wooded areas and fabric.

To extend the stains experiments further I introduced photographic chemicals and the Photogram/Raygram process inspired by Man Ray introducing a series of drips and exploring the positive and negative space.

I was very pleased with how the ring stains on the photogram turned out and decided to experiment with these pictures using ICT, scanning them onto photoshop and manipulating the colours.

From there I moved into 3D and relief casting as I wanted to explore the outcome of lifting the stains looking at the height and depth while using the same colour scheme from my ICT experiments.

Recently I have been experimenting with ‘accidental’ stains e.g where a cup of tea was thrown at a white dress, whilst maintaining the colour scheme from previous works. I’ve stitched around the stains to enhance them which is influenced by Nava Lubelski who stitches around stains on table cloths, canvas, paper and sheets to expose the beautiful, colourful abstract movement of the stain.
