Andy Warhol

Having started as a commercial artist Andy Warhol looked at ‘popular culture‘ for his inspiration. Warhol has explored this topic through Painting, Drawing, Print, Installation, Sculpture, Photography, Film, Audio and Music. His most iconic works are his screenprinted portraits of celebrities and his portrayal of popular everyday food packaging and logos.

Blek Le Rat

Blek Le Rat began stenciling in Paris in the early 1980′s and has influenced advertising, street art and graphical art and design. His works range from small stencils to full size figure paste ups, influenced by classical/historical icons to political commentary on war. His most famous protégé is Banksy who has developed the Blek Le Rat blueprint to worldwide fame.

C215

Chistian Guémy’s (otherwise known as C215) art has been influenced by Stencil pioneers such as Blek Le Rat, though his Classical remastering of Caravaggio or religious icongraphy and Banksy through his exploration of animals. However it’s C215‘s celebration and social anthropologic commentary of forgotten souls, street/homeless that celebrate global and cultural diversity that Christian Guémy is most celebrated for. These portraits have reenergised the stencil art scene introducing a new complexity of stencil and through the sighting of this work globally and narrative/questions raised.

C215 or Chistian Guémy is one of our featured artist in our 2011 GCSE Art/Textiles exam brief entitled ‘People and Places’ and we have interpreted C215‘s visual language through a combination of drawing, serigraphy and appliqué.

Consumerism in Art

Since the Pop Art movement consumerism and branded products have been investigated and influenced the work of artists. Company’s such as Absolut and Becks have recruited popular artists to promote and temporary rebrand their products with their own brand of art to increase sales.

D*Face

D*Face is a street artist who has expanded his trademark D*Dog character into Sculpture, Print, Graphical, Poster and Aerosol compositions. His work is heavily influenced by New York Street Art, Pop Art and Consumerism which include humour and social commentary.

Dave White

Dave White has been referred to as the UK’s answer to Andy Warhol and with modernist themes; such as star wars, and super heroes and villains to Roy Lichtenstein inspired vintage military painting, delicious food and drink paintings that would make Claes Oldenburg hungry and commissions for Nike and Coca Cola its easy to see why? Dave White‘s work oozes from the canvas, part action painting, part explosion, part abstract expressionism minus the abstraction. He is creativity cataloguing childhood dreams and young adolescent desires through a retro yet contemporary visual language.

Faile is a international art collective consisting of Patrick McNeil, Patrick Miller and Aiko Nakagawa. Their work ranges from printmaking, stenciling and painting and is heavily influenced by popular culture and the works of Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Julian Opie

Julian Opie investigates the figure, portraiture and landscape. He produced highly stylised and minimal pictures using mixed media (including video and ICT). In his portraiture the human face is reduced to a series of black outlines with flat areas of colour.

Obey Giant

Obey Giant is a street art campaign emerged from the skateboarding scene of the 1980′s created by the graphic designer and illustrator Shepard Fairey.

Fairey has produced a wide range of artwork from paste ups, stickers, screenprints, mix media stencil collage, to 15 foot mural installations worldwide. To consolidate his fame Fairey produced a now iconic series of posters supporting Barack Obama’s candidacy for US President in 2008 entitled “PROGRESS”, “HOPE”, and “CHANGE”.

Stephen Wiltshire

Stephen Wiltshire produces accurate and highly detailed architectural and urban compositions from memory. Stephen recently produced 10 metre long panoramic drawings and paintings of global cities such as Tokyo, London, New York and Madrid having only viewed these urban landscapes once.

Tinhead otherwise known as Christopher Wright is a UK based experimental Illustrator and mixed media artist. His work consists of lo-tech illustrations and mixed media collage/compositions that pay homage to the early Pop Art aesthetic of early Richard Hamilton and Peter Blake et al. Tinhead’s work features on The Foals debut album ‘Antidotes’.
